Check engine light: the most common causes

A steady glow is usually not an emergency; a flashing light is. Here are the causes that trigger a check engine light most often, how urgent each is, and what a fix typically costs.

The check engine light (more formally the malfunction indicator lamp, or MIL) is your car's way of saying the onboard computer has logged a fault. It is deliberately vague: the same amber light covers everything from a gas cap you forgot to tighten to a misfire that could wreck your catalytic converter. Steady light vs. flashing light

Before anything else, note how the light behaves:

  • Steady amber light — a fault is logged, but it is generally safe to drive to a shop or parts store in the next few days. Don't ignore it for weeks.

The most common triggers

1. Loose or faulty gas cap

It sounds too simple, but a loose, cracked or worn gas cap is one of the most common causes of a check engine light. It lets fuel vapor escape, which the evaporative-emissions (EVAP) system detects. Tighten the cap until it clicks; if the light stays on after a few drive cycles, a replacement cap costs about $15–$40. This is the cheapest possible fix, so always check it first.

2. Oxygen (O2) sensor

Oxygen sensors measure exhaust gases so the computer can fine-tune the fuel mixture. They degrade with age and are a frequent code source. Parts are modest ($40–$150) but labor varies with location; total repairs commonly land around $150–$400.

3. Catalytic converter (often code P0420)

A P0420 "catalyst efficiency below threshold" code often means the converter is failing — frequently as a downstream consequence of a long-ignored misfire or bad O2 sensor. This is one of the priciest common repairs, typically $900–$2,500 depending on the vehicle, because the part itself contains precious metals. Fixing the upstream cause early is how you avoid this bill.

4. Spark plugs and ignition coils

5. Mass airflow (MAF) sensor

The MAF sensor measures incoming air. When it is dirty or failing you get poor economy, stalling and hesitation. Sometimes it can be cleaned; replacement runs roughly $200–$400 installed.

6. EVAP system leaks

Beyond the gas cap, small leaks in the evaporative-emissions plumbing (hoses, purge valve, vent valve) are common. Costs vary widely with which component has failed.

Emissions and inspections

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires the OBD-II system on all cars sold in the US since 1996, and many states use it for emissions testing. A stored or active check engine light will usually fail a state emissions inspection, so it is worth resolving before your test is due.

How to find out what is wrong

Any OBD-II scanner or code reader — including inexpensive Bluetooth dongles and the free code-reading service many auto-parts stores offer — will pull the stored code (a P-code such as P0300 or P0420). That code narrows the problem to a system, but it is a starting point, not a diagnosis: a P0171 "system too lean" code, for example, can stem from a vacuum leak, a weak fuel pump or a dirty MAF sensor.
