What a misfire actually is

A misfire is a combustion event that fails or is incomplete in a cylinder. Every cylinder needs three things at the right moment: fuel, air and a spark. When one is missing or mistimed, that cylinder does not fire cleanly, the engine runs rough, and unburned fuel passes into the exhaust. The engine computer detects the tiny fluctuation in crankshaft speed and logs the code.

How it is diagnosed

A technician reads P0300 plus any accompanying codes (a P0300 with a P0171 "lean" code, for instance, points toward a vacuum leak or fuel-delivery issue). They then check the basics — plug condition, coil output, fuel trims — before moving to a compression test if the ignition and fuel systems check out.
